Relevance
Due to population aging, the number of older migrants living in European countries is rapidly rising. Accordingly, the morbidity patterns and health needs of migrants are gradually changing. For instance, more than 1 million cases of dementia and milder cognitive disorders can be estimated in the migrant population living in Europe. Developing diversity-sensitive policies and practices is therefore imperative for our healthcare systems to foster the inclusion of migrants (as other vulnerable groups) in the public health response to dementia. The ImmiDem project was designed to collect “real world” information on the dimensions of this emerging problem in Italy and the preparedness of national dementia services.
Objectives
The present virtual meeting will address the need of developing a diversity-sensitive approach to dementia, focusing on cross-cultural neuropsychology, on the preparedness of services, on situated prevention. These aspects will also be framed within the wider policies on aging and migration in place in Europe. The meeting will be an opportunity to discuss the results of the ImmiDem study and to present other ongoing initiatives on the subject at the European level.
Structure
The meeting is structured in seven presentations by researchers, delegates from public health agencies and patient associations. A short question and answer session will follow each presentation.
