A new lens on dementia

The Immidem project stems from a shared clinical observation among healthcare professionals in various Italian and European settings: “An increasing number of people with a migratory background are visiting our clinics due to cognitive disorders.” How does our National Healthcare System deal with this phenomenon nationally, regionally, and locally? Quantifying and understanding the issue of cognitive disorders among older migrants is the first step toward developing health policies that can target the phenomenon through a diversity-sensitive lens.

Project Objectives

The first three years of the Immidem project confirmed the initial clinical observation. The specific objectives of the second phase of the project will aim to address some of the gaps and challenges identified during the first three years of research: the limited use of cross-cultural cognitive tests, the shortage of key personnel such as interpreters and cultural mediators in services, inadequate training for healthcare professionals, and the lack of dementia information materials for patients and caregivers in languages other than Italian.
