Rowland Universal Dementia Assessment Scale (RUDAS). As part of the Immidem Study Group, the Centre for the Treatment and Study of Cognitive Disorders at Luigi Sacco Hospital is working on selecting the most suitable tools – those least impacted by cultural factors (ethnicity, language, education and literacy)- for the diagnostic assessment of migrants with cognitive disorders. The Rowland Universal Dementia Assessment Scale (RUDAS) is a screening subtest included in the European version of the Cross-Cultural Neuropsychological Test Battery (CNTB). It is designed to measure general cognitive functioning and has shown several advantages compared to other commonly used cognitive screening tests, including less need for linguistic and cultural adaptation and reduced variability in test performance across different education levels of patients.
The Centre for the Treatment and Study of Cognitive Disorders at Luigi Sacco Hospital has translated and validated the English version of the RUDAS developed by the Danish Dementia Research Centre (DDRC) and has made it available for download in PDF format on this page, along with the Administration and Scoring Guide.
Adaptation and translation of the RUDAS into Italian: an in-depth look
Prompted by the need to adapt cognitive test administration methods to respond to the linguistic and cultural specificities of migrant patients, Ilaria Cova and Giorgia Maestri (Neurology Unit, Luigi Sacco Hospital, Milan) recount the complex process of adapting and translating the RUDAS into Italian. This work was carried out by the Sacco Hospital team and involved bilingual translators and health professionals to ensure the validity and reliability of the results. Cross-cultural neuropsychological assessment poses unique challenges, including language barriers and variables such as educational background, familiarity with test items, and the frequency of use of images and words included in cognitive tests.
The importance of having tests specifically designed to be culturally sensitive is therefore crucial. RUDAS is a good example, as it was developed with the involvement of both healthcare professionals and cultural groups to ensure its suitability for the diverse backgrounds of patients.
