Immidem
Immidem, Dementia in immigrants and ethnic minorities: clinical-epidemiological aspects and public health perspectives is the first project dedicated to studying the phenomenon of cognitive disorders among the migrant population in Italy. Coordinated by the Italian National Institute of Health (Istituto Superiore di Sanità) through the Immidem Study Group, the project began with funding from the Ministry of Health as part of the 2016 “Ricerca Finalizzata” grant initiative (GR-2016-012364975) and continues under the 2021 “Ricerca Finalizzata” framework (GR-2021-12372081).
In addition to describing and quantifying cognitive disorders in the migrant population through clinical-epidemiological characterization, Immidem also aims to develop tools for promoting a culturally sensitive perspective on this phenomenon. In the second phase of the project, tests for cross-cultural cognitive assessment will be developed, training programs for healthcare workers will be initiated, and projects will be implemented to provide information and support to patients and their families.

Why Immidem?
More and more people with a migration history struggle with a cognitive disorder. What do the data on migration and ageing in our country and across Europe show? How does our National Healthcare System deal with this phenomenon nationally, regionally, and locally? Quantifying and understanding the issue of cognitive disorders among older migrants is the first step toward developing health policies that can target the phenomenon through a diversity-sensitive lens.

Project objectives
The project begins by describing the phenomenon of dementia among migrants and ethnic minorities, evaluating and expanding the availability of clinical approaches and diagnostic tools. Its aims include identifying strategies to overcome barriers limiting access to care and promoting dedicated healthcare pathways and good clinical practices. Finally, it seeks to create a space for reflection to foster a culturally informed approach to this issue.
